In searching for the road to you, I try to see the signs

Careful calculations and sharp dividing lines

Recipes and rulebooks to keep me safe and pure

But the times I find I need you most are the times I’m most unsure

 

And there you are, turning all the tables

There you are, healing on the seventh day

Following my lawful thoughts won’t lead me all the way

As I move beyond the black and the white, can you be the Lord of the Grey?

 

Voices all around me volunteer to help me see

To show me where it’s written, how it’s done and how to be

But circumstance and history reveal to me your grace

And beg of me compassion and your Spirit’s higher ways

 

And there you are, reaching for the outcast.

There you are, casting stones away.

Listening to my head I can’t hear all you have to say

As I move beyond the black and the white, can you be the Lord of the Grey?

 

When I was a child I only thought in childish ways

But letters carved in stone are not the image of your face.

Help me walk this balance as I seek to know your will.

A greater law of love is what you came here to fulfill.
